Which is better: Arraial do Cabo or Ilha Grande?
Arraial do Cabo and Ilha Grande are in the same region (Rio de Janeiro and Surroundings). Arraial do Cabo: the Brazilian Caribbean of the Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region); Ilha Grande: Atlantic Forest, trails and green water without a single car. For this month's weather, Arraial do Cabo has the edge. Driving from São Paulo, Ilha Grande costs less.

The difference that really decides
Both are on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state and less than three hours from the city of Rio de Janeiro, but they work in opposite ways. Arraial do Cabo is a small town with clear-water beaches that you reach by car, parking close to the sand, and the boat trip is the main activity. Ilha Grande is an island with no cars at all, where everything depends on trails or boats and the Atlantic Forest comes down to the beach.
That changes the kind of trip before you even choose a pousada (small inn). In Arraial, a weekend goes a long way: you can take the boat trip on Saturday, see Prainha and Praia Grande on Sunday and drive back in the late afternoon. On Ilha Grande, the arrival and departure days are partly lost to the crossing, so anyone staying two nights ends up with just one full day. That is why the island suits stays of three or four nights better.
The water is not the same either. Arraial sits at the point where upwelling happens, the phenomenon that brings cold, clean water from the ocean floor to the surface. It explains the Caribbean-looking sea and, at the same time, the low temperature that surprises many people in summer. Ilha Grande has greener, warmer and more sheltered water, because the beaches sit in coves surrounded by hills.
Getting there: drive to the sand, or drive plus boat
You can get to Arraial do Cabo entirely by car. It is 165 km from Rio along the Via Lagos, about 2 h 40 min, and the car stays useful afterward, because the beaches are spread around town and around Pontal do Atalaia. See the detailed cost in the road trip from Rio to Arraial do Cabo.
Ilha Grande takes one more step. You drive to one of the mainland ports, leave the car in a paid parking lot and cross by boat to Vila do Abraão. Conceição de Jacareí is the fastest departure point, with short speedboat crossings; Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba have cheaper, slower ferries. The road route to Angra is detailed in the road trip from Rio to Ilha Grande.

Where to stay and what it costs to sleep in each
Arraial do Cabo has the more conventional lodging of the two: pousadas downtown and at Praia dos Anjos, simple hotels near the bus station and vacation houses at Pontal. The average rate for a double room is around R$ 350 outside high season, and the nearby town of Cabo Frio is a fallback when Arraial fills up, since the two are only a little over 20 minutes apart by car.
On Ilha Grande, the price depends on where you sleep. Vila do Abraão has the cheapest range, with hostels and simple pousadas, and it is where the restaurants, shops and trailheads are. The isolated coves, such as Aracatiba, Freguesia de Santana and Praia Vermelha, charge more precisely because the rate usually includes the boat transfer and meals, with no alternative nearby.
One budget detail that is easy to miss: on Ilha Grande, every move costs money. Water taxis between beaches, schooner trips and the transfer back to the mainland all go into the calculation. In Arraial, much of what you want to see costs only the price of gas and parking, and only the boat trip is a real paid outing.
Beaches: clear sea versus dense forest
Arraial's postcard is Praia do Farol, on Ilha do Farol, which you can reach only by boat trip and which appears in almost every photo of the destination. Nearby are the Gruta Azul (Blue Cave), Praia do Forno, which requires a short trail, and Prainha, the easiest for families with children. The whole town lies within the Arraial do Cabo Marine Extractive Reserve, managed by ICMBio, which limits development and helps keep the water as it is.
On Ilha Grande, the name everyone looks for is Lopes Mendes Beach, a strip of white sand more than three kilometers long that you reach by a trail of about two hours, or by boat to Praia do Pouso and then another 20 minutes on foot. The island is almost entirely a state park, managed by INEA, and is part of the Paraty and Ilha Grande site, recognized by UNESCO as a mixed cultural and natural heritage site since 2019.
Can you combine both in the same trip?
You can, but it is not a comfortable pairing. They are on opposite sides of the state, with Rio in the middle: about 300 km and around five hours by car between Arraial do Cabo and the departure port for Ilha Grande, not counting the crossing. Anyone trying to fit both into five days spends more time on the road than in the water.
It makes more sense to pair each one with its natural neighbor. Arraial goes well with Búzios and Cabo Frio, all in the Lakes Region and less than 40 minutes from one another. Ilha Grande pairs with Paraty and Angra dos Reis, on the same Costa Verde. If the trip lasts a full week, choosing one of the two sides pays off far more than crossing the state.
