Praia do Patacho Boat Ride
Enjoy the coastline of Alagoas on this jangada boat ride around Praia do Patacho, one of the most beautiful beaches on the coast of São Miguel dos Milagres.
São Miguel dos Milagres is worth 2 to 3 days: enough for the main beaches, the natural reef pools and the trip to see manatees. The driest months run from October to December, with 37 to 70 mm of rain and highs of 30 to 31 °C; from May to July it rains much more (up to 323 mm in June), though the heat stays all year.
São Miguel dos Milagres is the heart of the Rota Ecológica dos Milagres (Milagres Ecological Route), a stretch of about 30 km of the AL-101 Norte highway that has become a parkway: asphalt lined with coconut palms on both sides, with no billboards and no gas station on every corner. The municipality's name comes from an old legend about a fisherman who found a piece of wood covered in slime that turned out to be an image of the Archangel Michael, and who was healed of a wound when he cleaned it. Today the village lives on small pousadas (small inns), with few rooms and high rates, scattered among the coconut palms. It is a model that keeps the coast free of high-rises and the place low-key, even after it became known as a destination.
The climate follows the same pattern as the rest of the north coast of Alagoas: warm all year, highs between 28 and 32 °C and warm sea in any month. Rain is concentrated in autumn and winter, from April to July, peaking in May and June. Spring and summer, from September to March, are dry and sunny, the best window for the natural pools, when the sea tends to be calmer. But on that outing it is the tide that decides, not the calendar: the pool only appears at low tide, whether in February or in June.
Activities in the region revolve around low water. Jangadas (traditional sailing rafts) leave from Patacho, Toque, Porto da Rua, Riacho and São Miguel beach itself for the reef pools, shallow and crystal clear over the corals. Upriver, on the Tatuamunha River, the Associação Peixe-Boi (Manatee Association) takes visitors out by boat to watch manatees in their habitat, a community conservation effort with more than a decade behind it. At night the village's sandy streets empty out: no clubs, no loud music, just the sea and the few lit tables at the pousadas. It is a destination for quiet, not for nightlife.

Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are the reverse of those in Europe and North America: summer falls between December and March and winter between June and August. In São Miguel dos Milagres there is hardly any winter: the heat is constant. The hottest month is March, with an average high of 32 °C; from June to August, the coolest months, the high is 28 °C and the low is 20 °C. The reference climate is that of the Maceió station.
The rainiest months are June, with 323 mm over 24 days, May, with 295 mm over 22 days, and July, with 271 mm over 23 days. The driest are December, with 37 mm over 9 days, November, with 45 mm over 6 days, and October, with 70 mm over 10 days.
The best weather window is from October to December, with November having the fewest rainy days; for the natural pools, the weather is drier and the sea tends to be calmer from September to March. Even so, the tide rules: whatever the month, the pool only appears at low tide, so check the day's tide table. If you travel between May and July, expect rain on 22 to 24 days a month, with no guarantee of clear weather.

The region is known for its charming pousadas with few rooms, concentrated in Toque, Porto da Rua and Riacho. That is the model that keeps the coast free of high-rises, and it also explains the higher rates. Because the beaches and pousadas are spread along a long stretch of the Ecological Route, it pays to choose a place to stay close to the beach, or the section, you most want to explore.

From September to March the weather is drier and the sea tends to be calmer, the best window for the natural pools; the months with the least rain are October, November and December. From April to July it rains more, peaking in May and June. The heat is constant all year, and the pool depends on low tide, not on the season.
They are reef pools that appear at low tide in front of several beaches in the region: Patacho, Toque, Porto da Rua, Riacho and São Miguel. Jangadas take visitors out to them, always following the day's tide schedule.
Two to three days is enough to see the main beaches and take the trips to the natural pools and the manatees. If you want to extend your trip along the Ecological Route to Maragogi or Porto de Pedras, you will need more time.
Both are on the same Ecological Route and have natural pools over reefs. Maragogi is bigger, with more choice of pousadas and trips; São Miguel dos Milagres is smaller and quieter, with charming pousadas and few guests at a time.
It helps a lot. The village itself is small, but the beaches and pousadas are spread along a long stretch of the Ecological Route, and there is not always public transport between them.
Yes, on the Tatuamunha River, through a community conservation project that takes visitors out by boat to watch the animals in their habitat, under protection rules.
