In brief

Ilhéus calls for 3 to 5 days: for the historic center, the Jorge Amado trail, a cacao farm and the urban beaches, along with Olivença. It has no marked dry season, so you can visit all year: September is the month with the least rain (129 mm over 13 days) and March the rainiest (217 mm over 17 days). Highs range from 26 to 29 °C, and summer, from December to March, is the hottest and the high season.

The destination

What to expect in Ilhéus

Ilhéus was born twice. The first time was in 1534, as one of the oldest hereditary captaincies in Brazil. The second was in the late 19th century, when cacao turned to gold and transformed the fishing village into the capital of the product that drove the economy of southern Bahia. The cacao colonels built the Art Deco and eclectic mansions that still dominate the historic center and financed theaters, banks and the São Sebastião Cathedral, which took 36 years to finish. The cycle broke in the 1980s with the witches' broom blight, but the architecture of the boom years is still standing, and many of the old farms now receive visitors.

No Brazilian city is as tied to the work of a writer as Ilhéus is to Jorge Amado. He was born and raised here, and set novels such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon and The Violent Land here, portraits of the struggle for land and power among the cacao colonels. The settings of the books are not just a tourist stop: they are still working. Bar Vesúvio, where in the fiction the Arab Nacib falls in love with the character Gabriela, still serves tables on Praça Dom Eduardo. The Jorge Amado Cultural House, a few meters away, keeps the writer's belongings and the story of his childhood.

The Bataclã, a cabaret and casino that the colonels frequented in the 1920s and 1930s, was restored and reopened as a cultural center, with a guided tour that includes the room of Maria Machadão, one of the house's most remembered figures. On the edges of the city, beaches such as Milionários and Malhado are a few minutes from the center. Olivença, farther south, has a wider strip of sand and natural spring water. The cacao farms that now open their plantations to visitors, with handmade chocolate tastings, show where the wealth that built all this came from. Ilhéus also has its own airport, Jorge Amado, named in honor of the writer, which lets you arrive by plane without depending on the road.

Best time to visit Ilhéus

Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are the reverse of those in Europe and North America: summer falls between December and March and winter between June and August. In Ilhéus summer is the hottest, with highs of 29 °C and lows of 22 °C, and winter is mild: in July and August, the coolest months, the average high is 26 °C and the low is 19 °C.

It rains all year, with no marked dry season, although there are differences. September is the month with the least rain, with 129 mm over 13 days, followed by August (134 mm over 16 days) and May (145 mm over 14 days). March is the wettest, with 217 mm over 17 days, followed by April (205 mm over 15 days) and June and July (201 mm each, over 16 and 18 days).

Since no month is truly dry, the city can be visited at any time. Summer, from December to March, is the high season; outside that period prices tend to be lower.
